SAN DIEGO—DENTSPLY GAC's first sponsored Orthodontic World Congress (OWC), held at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego last month, proved to be a success.

During the four-day event, attendees were treated to a variety of clinical lectures, insightful practice-building ideas and a collection of internationally-recognized inspirational speakers.

Upon arrival, attendees were greeted with a “Savor the Flavor of San Diego” Welcome Reception, spotlighting the best of what San Diego has to offer—food, craft beers, wines, artwork and music. The meeting wrapped up with a truly wild event, as attendees got to experience an exotic journey through the San Diego Zoo, followed by dinner and dancing at the Safari Club located in the heart of the zoo.

The meeting featured three keynote speakers. First was New York Times bestselling author and assistant professor of marketing at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, Jonah Berger. Offering his unique take on how ideas are born and why some go contagious, he extolled the benefits of each practice finding its inner remarkability. Berger, whose book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On”, is featured frequently in the Wall Street Journal, NPR, Wired, Bloomberg Businessweek and the Atlantic.

Steve Curtin, author of “Delight Your Customers: 7 Simple Ways to Raise Your Customer Service from Ordinary to Extraordinary” also spoke at the event. He offered the crowd insight on getting to the essence of what their practice is all about. Once a practice can do that, they can transform the doctor/patient relationship from transactional to inspirational.

The keynote trio was closed out by an inspirational and introspective presentation by Jon Acuff. Also a New York Times bestselling author, Acuff is the author of four books including Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average & Do Work that Matters.

The business portion of the OWC also featured speakers Dr. Lou Shuman and Amy Morgan, both of the Pride Institute, and Dr. Ben Burris, who built one of the largest practices in North America in Arkansas.

Devotees of the clinical side of things had plenty to sink their teeth into as well, as the OWC featured a diverse group of speakers. The topics included everything from taking another look at lingual treatment to dealing with complex and risky orthodontic movements such as periodontally facilitated orthodontics.

In addition to the scheduled speakers, DENTSPLY Chairman and CEO Bret Wise spoke, addressing the company’s ongoing commitment to both orthodontics and the orthodontic community as a whole. Steve Jenson, vice president of global orthodontics and Brad Clatt, vice president of sales and commercial operations also addressed the crowd with some insight into where DENTSPLY GAC is going in the future.

The annual event was well attended by a mix of orthodontists and their staff as well as residents and more than 30 University leaders. The location of the 2016 OWC is still being considered.
