Sometimes, patients will call me and wonder whether their Invisalign treatment has caused their swollen gums. I let them know that swollen gums are commonly experienced by many patients who are in the midst of orthodontic treatment.
Fortunately, most cases of swollen gums can be managed by controlling plaque. If you have noticed swollen gums while undergoing Invisalign, I recommend that you visit my office so I can ensure that your swelling isn’t a sign of a more serious problem.
If your swollen gums appear to be a normal side effect of Invisalign, I will suggest floss threaders and electric toothbrushes that can do a good job of effectively removing plaque and food debris from your mouth. These tools can also stimulate your gum tissue and improve your condition.
Since Invisalign aligners can be removed for brushing and flossing, there is no reason you cannot achieve optimal oral health when going through treatment. Make it a top priority to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day.
Most patients find that once they have completed Invisalign treatment, their swollen gums are resolved. In the event your gum tissue does not shrink down to its normal size after Invisalign, there are certain treatments that can treat and reshape your gums to give them a more natural appearance.
It’s important to note that Invisalign does not cause gum disease so if you notice any signs of gum disease so if you are facing swollen gums, do not automatically assume that they are a symptom of gum disease. I will let you know if your swollen gums are a symptom of a this condition and provide you with treatment options if necessary.
