Native Intelligence: Management Software without the Catch

From the ground up
"About three years ago, I moved to Salt Lake with my family to open a new practice. I had some ‘must-haves' in my new management software: I needed a solution that was native to Mac; I didn't want to be at the mercy of my Internet provider; and I wanted everything to be on a local machine so that if anything went down, I could still have access to my charts, photographs, and all my other important information. So I went with topsOrtho. It was just a natural choice.

"The unique thing about tops that I love is that it was built around the Mac OS [operating system]. It's not a Windows product, retrofitted to work in a Mac environment. It was built from the ground up by programmers who know the OS, inside and out. It's software in its native environment. And what happens is that updates occur in real time. Instantaneously. My last update was instantaneous.

"In my other PC-based practice, I paid $800 to $1,000 a month for IT guys to come out for constant fixes. There were always updates that Microsoft came out with—some of them very expensive—and when you have to upgrade your operating system, you have to wait for the PC-based program to update. The cost of running topsOrtho? Almost zero.

More than pretty pictures
"And when it comes to training new staff, you can't beat the Mac environment. It's so simple. Even when we're doing things like generating letters, it's just easier. There are fewer steps, it's more reliable, it's more intuitive—I mean, it's just much easier than working on a Windows-based program.

"It's elegant, too. I really like how it looks so much nicer than any other practice management software I've ever worked with before—and I've worked with several—it's just wonderful. And because Apple works with imaging, that's really important. After all, we use those images to make the case [to] a patient that he or she would benefit from our work.

"And the difference in speed is noticeable. It's far faster. Everything is instantaneous. Even when I'm remoting in from home—or when my office manager is remoting in from her iPad or laptop at home—it's absolutely instantaneous. It's like I'm sitting at my office. It's so much quicker, so much more stable, and far more secure than a Windows-based program when you're trying to remote in. The speed is impressive.

"I did have a hiccup in the software the other day and had to call support. The support staff was great and I even got a text from the owner, Dr. Mark Sanchez, to check in and see how I was doing. Turns out the software just needed to be updated to the latest version of Yosemite [Apple's OS] and it took all of 60 seconds to resolve.

Visible means of support
"And security. The big 'what if' is gone—topsOrtho backs up everything every hour with Apple's built-in Time Machine, and I don't even have to think about it. I don't have to pay an outside service to back it up, either. It's as easy as swapping out a hard drive that I put in my pocket at night and take home with me. That doesn't happen with any other OS or any other program.

"I'd summarize my experience to OrthoTown readers this way: I know it will work every time I open it up. This is really the single best choice they could pick."
