AAO Announces 2009-10 Slate of Officers, Board of Trustees Members

NEW OFFICERS ELECTED, NEW TRUSTEE INSTALLED AT AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODONTISTS’ 109TH ANNUAL SESSION IN BOSTON

ST. LOUIS—The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) elected officers for 2009-10 and also installed a new member of the Board of Trustees at its 109th Annual Session held recently in Boston.

Robert James Bray, DDS, MS was elected the AAO 2009-10 president.  Dr. Bray is in private practice in the Atlantic City, N.J. area, with offices in Brigantine, Somers Point, Absecon, Marmora and Wildwood. In addition to his nine years of service on the AAO Board of Trustees, Dr. Bray served for three years as vice chairman of AAO Services, Inc., the for-profit subsidiary of the AAO.  

Long active in orthodontic education, Dr. Bray is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Temple University School of Dentistry

in Philadelphia.  He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally on the subjects of clinical practice, practice management, office design and orthodontic

office systems.   He is also involved with Eastman Dental Center at the University of Rochester orthodontic program as a guest lecturer.

“It is a great honor to serve the orthodontic specialty in this role,” said Dr. Bray. “In the coming year, the AAO Board of Trustees and I will continue to examine and act upon the critical issues facing dentistry in general and orthodontics in particular.  The issues include public education, the recruitment and retention of faculty members, development of international members and maintaining strong, effective relationships with all healthcare organizations.  Our goal, as well as that of the healthcare organizations with which we are associated, is to help our members provide the highest level of care to our patients.”

Lee W. Graber, DDS, MS, MS, PhD of the Chicago suburb of Vernon Hills, Ill., was elected president-elect of the AAO.  Michael B. Rogers, DDS of Augusta, Ga. was elected secretary-treasurer. Dr. Rogers also represents the Southern Association of Orthodontists on the AAO Board of Trustees.

Brent E. Larson, DDS, MS of Rochester, Minn. was installed as the new Trustee on the AAO Board of Trustees.  He will succeed Dr. Graber as the representative of the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO).

MSO serves AAO members practicing in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Manitoba.  MSO is one of the AAO’s eight constituent societies.

In addition to Drs. Bray, Graber, Larson and Rogers, the AAO Board of Trustees includes:  John F. Buzzatto, DMD, MDS, Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists; Gayle Glenn, DDS, MSD, Southwestern Society of Orthodontists; Nahid Maleki, DDS, MS, Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists; Hugh R. Phillis, DMD, Northeastern Society of Orthodontists; Morris N. Poole, DDS, Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists; and Robert E. Varner, DMD, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists.  Raymond George, Sr., DMD, of Lincoln, R.I., is the immediate past president.

The AAO is the specialty organization for orthodontists recognized by the American Dental Association.  The AAO is comprised of 15,500 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.  It is the oldest and largest dental specialty organization in the world.  The AAO’s public Web site is http://www.braces.org
