A Traditionalist's View of Facial Aesthetics
by Jimmy Boley, DDS, MS

This course uses a review of the literature and case reports from some of the articles quoted to document that typically, the four classic goals of orthodontics, aesthetics, health, function, and stability, can be achieved most of the time. The primary objectives are to approximate a normal skeletal pattern and normally occlude the teeth on their bases (jaw) so that they are in equilibrium with their environments. The key to equilibrium in the majority instance is minimal alternates of the mandibular arch form and either maintaining or uprighting the mandibular incisors. In addition to typically giving satisfactory stability this approach provides the foundation for good facial aesthetics if one accepts good facial aesthetics as lips behind E-line, no mentalis strain, and a normal width smile.
