You Should Know:
Motion View Software, LLC

by Benjamin Lund, Editor,
Orthotown Magazine

Orthotown Magazine sat down with Dan Knoch, CEO and founder of Motion View Software, LLC, to discuss what the company does for orthodontists and why you should know about it.

What is Motion View Software, LLC?
Knoch: Our bottom line is to free our clients from things a robot can do. Thus our company's name is Motion View (Motion for robotic motion and View for machine vision.) And our product's name is Ortho Insight 3D, providing orthodontic and orthognathic insight for diagnosis and treatment planning in 3D.

What is your philosophy at Motion View Software, LLC?
Knoch: Our philosophy is to provide in-house tools for orthodontists to become as independent as possible from outside sources. Our tools let orthodontists be more creative in their approach to treatment rather than be stuck in ruts created by relying on tools from third-party vendors. To make our tools available to the maximum number of practices, we have very reasonably priced our system – approximately half the price of comparable competitors.

We help orthodontists save time and money while providing higher quality results for their patients. We want to give full control to each orthodontist's office so that doctors and staff do not need to outsource to multiple companies for various stages in the treatment planning process or even for treatment modalities. Ortho Insight 3D automates Bolton calculations and space analysis. Precision robotic bracket positioning with our indirect bonding module helps orthodontists significantly shorten treatment time by minimizing the need for bracket repositioning during the early stage of treatment. Increased precision placement of brackets results in faster alignment of the entire dentition, achieving what we have termed "More Direct to Ideal Tooth Positioning." Orthodontists also spend less time detailing and finishing because they can use more actual straight wire (rather than bent wires that often increase friction).

Tell us about the company's history in orthodontics.
Knoch: We started designing orthodontic software in 1981, beginning with a cephalometric tracing system, followed by a video imaging system. Our company was first to integrate cephalometric tracing predictions with the morphing of the associated digital photographs. We followed with practice management and 3D treatment planning tools, and continue increasing our scope of products. We specialize in automating clinical procedures that help orthodontists better utilize their staff. Users can eliminate outsourcing and storage costs by investing in our cost-effective robotic 3D laser desktop scanner and its software that does far more than just scan orthodontic models and impressions.

What would you consider to be the "best kept secret" about Motion View Software, LLC?
Knoch: Most people are surprised by how much the software does. We provide tools for diagnosis and treatment planning, including extractions and space closure simulations, lateral expansion for planning surgery and more. While the doctor is ultimately the one responsible for treatment, our software frees doctors and staff from much of the time-consuming and laborintensive manual work entailed with physical models, and yields quick high-precision data for planning options for each patient. First visits can include taking an impression and go all the way to showing the patient initial treatment options with the virtual models. With adding our facial scanning and surgical modules to our desktop scanning and indirect bonding software already on the market, we anticipate dramatically increasing the base of professionals we serve.

How are your products developed?
Knoch: From an orthodontic and surgical standpoint, our products are from my collective research, training and experiences in the orthodontic and surgical fields combined with feedback from customers.

Our software engineers have a wide range of knowledge specific to our industry. Product development of specific features really starts with our end users in mind.

We also do in-house hardware design and production. We are one of the few companies that designs, engineers, manufactures and supports both hardware and software all in the same facility.

How can orthodontists contact Motion View Software, LLC or purchase products?
Knoch: Orthodontists can contact us directly by phone at 423-475-6914, fax at 423-475-6924, e-mail at sales@motionview3d.com, or they can visit www.motionview3d.com.
