You Should Know: ORTHOgami by Chelsea Knorr, Editor, Orthotown Magazine

We spoke to OralWise, Inc., President Keith Allen and General Manager Brix Gatti, RDH, to learn about Orthogami, a new product from the company that is the only flossing device in the world that allows you to create the perfect “C-shape” without ever having to put your hands in your mouth.

What is your background in ortho?
Allen: I don’t come from the dental industry. I think my perspective as an accomplished media producer and entertainment executive with the extensive branding experience lends itself to the unique and effective nature of Orthogami.

Gatti: I am a loud and proud dental hygienist, as well as the general manager of Oralwise. My passion for oral health led me to Oralwise, where I have been able to help bridge the gap between the more serious (and often boring) ortho industry and Orthogami, a product that has ignited excitement and passion for oral health among professionals and consumers alike.

Tell us about Orthogami.
Gatti: Orthogami is a one-of-a-kind flossing system that has truly revolutionized flossing with braces. Orthogami features two BPA-free handles representing miniature nunchucks, which are connected by a piece of disposable floss. In contrast to traditional GumChucks, Orthogami has a unique “hook” on one of the tips, which hooks over and under the arch wire in order to anchor one of the handles. The ability to maneuver the handles creates easier access to posterior regions of the mouth, ideal leverage, and most importantly, the ability to create the perfect “C-shape” with the floss. When finished flossing, simply press the button on either end of the Orthogami handles and shoot the tips in the trash can, a feature that ignites the inner child in all of us!

Best of all, our handles are now available in an autoclavable version so dental professionals can not only save time fl ossing patients chairside, but also demonstrate how to properly use the product before leaving the office.

Where did this idea come from?
Allen: Orthogami came about after loyal GumChucks fans requested something special for those with braces. Jeromi, one of the creators of original GumChucks, had a drawing for the initial concept of Orthogami, consisting of a hook to go over the arch wire. This concept was further developed after Jeromi and I collaborated with some of the top dental professionals in the world, including Dr. Thomas Nabors out of Nashville, Tennessee, who had become very fond of GumChucks. This power team strategized on how to best design the product so that it was the ultimate orthodontic flossing device, and eventually submitted the project to TeamsDesign, who calibrated the design and put the final touches together.

You are in an elevator. A man asks what your company does. You have 15 seconds before the door opens. What do you say?
Allen: Orthogami is the only flossing device in the world that will allow you to create the perfect “C-shape” without ever having to put your hands in your mouth, or having to thread through brackets; and best of all, it takes under two minutes to floss the entire mouth! It is ideal for those who find it difficult or time consuming to floss with braces. Orthogami is faster, better, easier flossing.

What is the philosophy at OralWise?
Gatti: To simplify oral health by making it more accessible.
