Welcome, Dr. Edmund Khoo, to the Orthotown Advisory Board!

To quote the late American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Life is a journey, not a destination."

Dr. Edmund Khoo believes that this concept certainly illustrates his personal journey thus far. Khoo studied dentistry at the University of Western Australia, where he graduated with honors in 2005.

After practicing as a general dentist for a few years, his desire to broaden his education and pursue orthodontics as a specialty led him to New York University's College of Dentistry. He graduated in 2012 with a certificate in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, and a diploma in orthodontic education. That same year, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

With the encouragement, motivation and inspiration of his mentors, Khoo stayed on as a full-time faculty member at his alma mater, where he currently serves as a clinical assistant professor. Teaching, research and clinical instruction are his passions. He has a particularly keen interest in evidence-based orthodontics.

Khoo does not subscribe to any particular orthodontic philosophy, but he does believe that orthodontics should have its principles rooted strongly in science and common sense. He employs such methods to groom his residents toward developing the best of their skills and achieving board certification.

Khoo has published in notable journals, such as the Journal of Dental Research and American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. He also lectures both nationally and internationally, and has been invited to chair numerous scientific sessions.

His awards and achievements include the prestigious American Association of Orthodontists Charley Schultz Scholar Award, American Association of Orthodontists Foundation TM Graber Teaching Award, and NYU Faculty Council Teacher Recognition Award. He is also the current chair-elect and future chair for the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Section on Orthodontics.

If he has any free time, he likes to explore the food and restaurant scene in New York City, and play bass guitar. Khoo said he is "excited and humbled to be part of the select few who comprise the Orthotown Editorial Advisory Board," and he looks forward to being an integral member of the team.
