Tonawanda, N.Y.—Dr. Carl F. Gugino, founder of Great Lakes Orthodontics (now Great Lakes Dental Technologies) and original member of its board of directors, died Aug. 4, 2025.

A retired orthodontist and lecturer, Gugino co-founded the company with Peter R. Breads in 1965 and helped guide it as an advisor, mentor and board member. He was recognized for his progressive contributions, including co-developing the first computerized cephalometrics and visual treatment objective program in orthodontics, and for his work in developing the Zerobase Orthodontic Philosophy.

Gugino lectured internationally, established study clubs in Japan, Italy and France, and served as honorary president for each. “Dr. Gugino was a true visionary,” said Great Lakes President and CEO John Ende. “His relentless passion for advancing the profession and improving patient outcomes will be greatly missed.”
