Virtual Communication on the Grow

Wm. Randol Womack, DDS
Editorial Director,
Orthotown Magazine
Last month I gave you an overview of the recent survey we did about Orthotown Magazine and Orthotown.com. We also keep an eye on Orthotown.com’s penetration into the orthodontic community by checking the number of orthodontists who have registered on the Web site. The latest numbers show that Orthotown.com has more than 2,000 registered users – approximately 20 percent of orthodontists in the U.S. The activity on Orthotown.com has increased leaps and bounds over what it was just one year ago. Very exciting!

I also mentioned last month that I had asked the Webmasters to expand Orthotown.com to include a “Virtual Study Club” section where orthodontic cases, according to classification and identified by ID number, could be posted with beginning, progress and final records added. Next, I asked them to provide the opportunity for registered doctors to view the cases and then to “subscribe” to a particular case (or cases) in order to receive e-mail notifications when new records are posted. I am excited to report that this feature is now in the testing stage and could even be “up and running” by the time you read this. It has been my vision to develop this capability on Orthotown.com to provide more value to the area of posting cases for review and evaluation. Unlike our colleagues in general dentistry, we have not been able to efficiently show results on the initial posting of a case as one can do with cosmetic dentistry or many other areas of general dental treatment.

Many cases have been posted on Orthotown.com over the past 18 months but after initial postings of cases there has been no easy access to any progress or final records to see how the case was actually treated and which comments of “advice” the doctor actually used in doing the treatment. I think you will find this a unique feature, available only on Orthotown.com.

I hope you noticed last issue that we published an original research article on clinical applications of CBCT technology in orthodontics. This was a first for Orthotown Magazine but it will not be the last. Keep reading for more exciting original articles that will appear first in this publication. In addition you can always access previous issues of Orthotown Magazine in the archive section of the Web site under the “magazine” tab.

We are very excited about the growth Orthotown.com and Orthotown Magazine has achieved in a relatively short time. Our goal is to keep improving the value and the interest of these two areas of professional communication within our orthodontic community.
