Ken Alexander When Ken Alexander’s sons were growing up, “I would say, ‘One of you has to become an orthodontist and the other take over my business,’ ” the orthodontic management consultant recalls. “Both took all the required sciences in college to become a dentist, but Ryan (pictured above left), as the oldest, graduated first and asked if he could work for me. For five years, he traveled with me for consulting while gradually taking on clients of his own. He got his broker’s license and learned everything he could about orthodontic transitions as he helped me put together appraisals and terms sheets.” (Their article, “Resetting the Clock,” begins here.) Meanwhile, younger son Steven (pictured above right) also fulfilled his part of the deal: He became an orthodontist, the owner of Alexander Orthodontics in Queensbury, New York. “Both have achieved success well beyond my dreams,” Ken says.

Blair Feldman “Long-term removable retention is critical in maintaining orthodontic results, so I recommend having the conversation about retainers and replacements at the initial case presentation,” says Dr. Blair Feldman (“Making a Fresh Start”), an orthodontist and the president of Retainer Club, a subscription-based replacement retainer company. “Practices that explain the long-term responsibilities of the patient in terms of retention will be rewarded with patients with realistic expectations. These patients will be more engaged in the retention phase of their treatment and understand when they need to return to the orthodontist.”

Zvi Kennet “I wasn’t at all into technology during dental school,” says Dr. Zvi Kennet— a surprising admission from a doctor with a reputation as an early adopter of technology such as digital X-rays (“Yes, I am that old”), dental lasers and digital orthodontics. “But before my orthodontic residency, I did an AEGD program at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. Suddenly, I realized how new technologies and techniques could completely change what I had learned in dental school and I learned not to accept my schooling as the only way. As an orthodontist, I started seeing other methods that weren’t taught in residencies that allowed me to develop the arches significantly and completely change the orthodontic possibilities.” Kennet’s article, “Non-Extraction Treatment Plan,” begins here.
