HOUSTON—OrthoAccel Technologies has been granted two new patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and one international patent from the State Intellectual Patent Office of the People’s Republic of China, in the category of vibrating dental devices.

The new patents protect key design elements and ranges of parameters for AcceleDent, an FDA-cleared vibratory orthodontic device that is clinically proven to speed up orthodontic treatment by as much as 50 percent and reduce the discomfort associated with orthodontic treatment.

OrthoAccel now holds 13 patents including these three new ones focused on its breakthrough AcceleDent product, and these patent grants further validate the distinct nature of AcceleDent’s SoftPulse Technology.

“Our growing patent portfolio demonstrates OrthoAccel’s continued commitment to innovation that enhances orthodontic practice and improves the patient experience,” said Michael K. Lowe, president and CEO of OrthoAccel. “We’re proud to receive our first patent from China as we further expand the global footprint of accelerated orthodontics with AcceleDent.”

A Class II medical device, AcceleDent is available by prescription in more than 3,000 orthodontic locations in North America and nearly 800 international locations. Some of the industry’s leading orthodontists and their patients tout AcceleDent as the only fast, safe and gentle solution that resolves the two most common barriers to treatment—length of treatment and pain.

To use AcceleDent patients bite down on the product mouthpiece for 20 minutes daily while gentle vibrations from its patented SoftPulse Technology accelerate bone modeling and remodeling in the craniofacial region.

In addition to covering core AcceleDent design elements, the new patents support AcceleDent’s ability to store and communicate key usage information. Lowe added that a $12 million equity financing that the company recently announced will allow OrthoAccel to continue investing in innovation and further expand the company’s patent portfolio.
