2009 – The Year of Digital Conversion

Orthotown Magazine
What could be more appropriate for my column kicking off the second year for Orthotown Magazine than to give you a snapshot of what will be our focus in 2009. If 2008 was the Year of the Digital Explosion, then I dub 2009 the Year of Digital Conversion. My observations over the past year from what I have read and the meetings I have attended indicate that the impact of the digital explosion will become permanent during this year and in 2010.

We've focused our editorial calendar to highlight the technological advances that are becoming the "way to practice" going forward. What indicators have moved me to think this way? As a result of two presentations at the Invisalign Summit, we will take a look at the impact TADs will have on Invisalign treatment and another look at CBCT scans and their impact on diagnosis and treatment planning as well as the orthodontist's "liability" when prescribing and evaluating this new way to look at orthodontic problems.

A review of risk management will address the old concepts but will also interject how technology is impacting this very important aspect of practice management. The recommendations of the past 40 years are very different going forward in this digital age. My research on the past and the future of this topic is posing some very interesting questions that every orthodontist will have to answer. Orthotown Magazine is striving to assist in understanding these issues.

Updates on the economic crisis and how it is affecting practice health and growth will be important to review. What is coming in this new year as a new administration takes control of our present and our future? What about your retirement plans (if you still have any)? What do orthodontists think about our profession, both now and going forward – will it be good or bad?

Of course, we can expect to bring you even newer advances in technology that will likely be announced at the American Association of Orthodontists exhibits in Boston, Massachusetts, May 1-5, 2009. I look forward to reviewing them for you in coming issues of Orthotown Magazine. As 2008 was a year of economic change (big time) we expect 2009 to be just as surprising; we just don't know if the package will be wrapped with a bright red ribbon or an ominous black one.

So have a happy new year and say your prayers for 2009.
