Greetings Townies!
A lot has changed since the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) held its
80th Annual Session in 1979 in Washington, D.C. We had just started making the
move from wrap-around metal braces to bonded brackets, and few of us even dreamed
of owning a personal computer. Now, 30 years later, as we meet for the 110th Annual
Session in our nation’s capital, April 30-May 4, just think of all the clinical advances our
beloved profession has made. Not only do we own personal computers, but we’re now
using them to view digital imaging exams and discussing our practices and cases with
members nationwide via e-mail and on Web sites like Orthotown.com.
Yes, a lot has changed in 30 years, but one thing has never changed: Our specialty’s
unwavering commitment to providing the best possible treatment and service to our
patients. Our theme for this year’s Annual Session, “Passion for Excellence,” is
a reflection of that commitment. This year’s Annual Session is dedicated to Dr.
Robert W. Baker Sr. and Dr. J. Daniel Subtelny in recognition of their many contributions
to orthodontics and to the many orthodontists they have trained and
mentored over the years.
The 2010 AAO Annual Session offers many exciting opportunities for you to
manifest your passion for excellence. Learn from outstanding presenters on scientific,
clinical and business topics, and from other orthodontic team members from
around the U.S. and abroad. Not only are we offering the best in clinical presentations
from some of your fellow Townies like Dr. David Paquette and Dr. Robert
Boyd, but we’re also offering several excellent programs to help your staff members
increase their skills and knowledge.
For the second consecutive year, the 2010 Annual Session program will include live clinical
procedures done by orthodontists on patients, filmed and broadcast live to joint doctor/
staff seminars. You do not want to miss the 2010 live orthodontic procedure sessions
featuring demonstrations of mini-implant insertion and application of laser technology.
While career-related learning is essential, often our personal goals and interests also help
drive our motivation to succeed at work. The Annual Session Personal and Professional
Development program will examine the relationship between the personal dreams of
employees and achievement of organizational goals. Inspiring presenters will share perspectives
on this topic and others that are important to many of us as individuals.
As always, the AAO Exhibit Hall will feature the world’s largest assemblage of orthodontic
products under one roof, including your friends at Orthotown. The Annual
Session Program schedule will allow time for you to explore the Exhibit hall each day.
Begin your Annual Session experience with relaxation and humor at the opening ceremonies
on Saturday, May 1. Providing entertainment will be Defending the Caveman,
the longest-running solo play that has ever appeared on Broadway, where it opened in
1995. It takes a light-hearted look at how men and women frequently misunderstand
each other. The evening will also feature the music of a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
tribute band – similar to the Jersey Boys musical on the story of the Four Seasons.
Come join us for an outstanding Annual Session program and
enjoy the rich history of Washington, D.C. We look forward to seeing
you there!
Kind regards,

Dr. Robert James Bray
AAO President
