AAO FOUNDATION 2012 AWARDS FUNDING PROPOSALS

DUE DECEMBER 15, 2011

The AAO Foundation (AAOF) has announced that 2012 AAOF awards materials are posted on the AAOF website at http://aaofoundation.net/AwardsProgram/Fundingfor2012.aspx. Proposals for funding requests must be received by the AAOF at its St. Louis, Mo. office no later than December 15, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. Central Time.

Proposals may be submitted for the following AAOF funding awards:
• Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Awards (OFDFA) for junior faculty in years 1-3/5 of their academic careers, and this may be used for salary supplement.
• Biomedical Research Award for junior faculty in years 3/5-14 of their academic careers, and may not be used for salary supplement. (Overlap with OFDFA is by design.)
• Education Innovation Award Planning Grant.

Proposals that address the specialty’s concerns with respect to craniofacial anomalies and special care patients are encouraged in all categories.

AAOF awards are made possible through support of the Continued Commitment to the Specialty® campaign. To learn how to contribute as an individual or corporation, visit http://aaofoundation.net/Campaign/ContinuedCommitmenttotheSpecialtyreg.aspx.

Since 1994, the AAOF Awards Program has provided $8 million in funding, primarily in support of junior faculty, including 148 fellowship awards, 148 research awards, and more than 1,000 gifts in support of orthodontic education.

Support for junior faculty has resulted in:
• More than one hundred articles and abstracts published in orthodontic journals, and in journals outside of the orthodontic specialty and the dental profession.
• Scores of lectures at dental, orthodontic and at other scientific meetings.
• Professional advancement. To date at the 70 graduate orthodontic residency programs in the U.S. and Canada there are:
• 28 department chairs and/or program directors who received AAOF funding while they were junior faculty members.
• Numerous tenured, associate- and full-professor positions.
• Eleven recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health.
• A pool of orthodontic faculty. 80 percent of junior faculty supported by the AAOF remain in full-time academics after five years.

Legacy 300 Campaign

In addition to its overall fundraising campaign, Continued Commitment to the Specialty®, the AAOF is seeking support for its Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project (www.aaoflegacycollection.org) through the Legacy 300 Campaign through December 31, 2011. Its goal is to raise a maximum of $1.5 million from no more than 300 pledgers, known as the “Legacy 300,” whose gifts to the AAOF are restricted for this purpose. Pledges must be a minimum of $5,000, and may be redeemed over as many as five years.

The Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project is a compilation of nine of the eleven known collections of longitudinal craniofacial growth records of children in the U.S. and Canada who did not receive orthodontic treatment. The collections represent the work of hundreds of investigators that have been gathered, catalogued and studied over more than 75 years. The materials in the collections are irreplaceable. Documentation includes skull x-ray images, hand-wrist films, dental radiographs, facial photos, study casts and written records on the physical and educational development of children of varied ethnicities and growth patterns. The purpose of the Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project is to make collections available for viewing and further investigation by clinicians, craniofacial investigators, students of human growth, and interested members of the public.
The contributing collections, working individually, have produced most of the information that is available in the contemporary orthodontic literature on longitudinal craniofacial growth in untreated children. Now, by merging data from the several collections, it is hoped to make possible further collaborative studies that will enrich and refine the collective knowledge of craniofacial growth in untreated children and adolescents.

Whether one has or has not made a pledge in support of Continued Commitment to the Specialty®, restricted gifts for the Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project are invited.

For new pledgers or those who have completed their previous pledge(s), this would constitute a new pledge.

For those with open pledges, a pledge restricted to the Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project would increase the total lifetime pledge by the amount pledged, and would increase the payment schedule accordingly.

Pledges are welcome from individuals, companies, alumni associations, and other organizations. To become one of the Legacy 300, send an e-mail to aaofevp@aaortho.org. In it, note the dollar amount of the donation ($5,000 minimum), how frequently statements should be issued (annually/quarterly), and the statement duration (maximum of five years). Stipulate in the message that the pledge is to be restricted to the Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project.

More than $1.2 million of the $1.5 million goal has been realized. See http://aaofoundation.net/Campaign/Legacy300.aspx for a list of those who have contributed to the Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections Project.
