Howard: It is just a huge honor for me today to be podcast interviewing Dr. Herb Moskowitz is the chairman and CEO and co-founder of  ioTech International. He is a co-author of ioTech's patent and global patent applications. He previously served as chairman and CEO of Advanced Tissue Sciences and also Life Medical Sciences, two publicly traded medical technology companies. He has served as a board member of several other public and private medical technology companies. He has previously practiced clinical dentistry for more than 25 years, having graduated from the University of Tennessee Dental School. How'd you get all the way from Tennessee to Boca Raton, Florida?

Herb: I just went downhill

Howard: You just went downhill

Herb: We just we just follow the curve.

Howard: So is that University of Tennessee that's in Nashville right?

Herb: No it's actually in Memphis

Howard: Oh my gosh what am I thinking universities I've been there unbelievable. So man Memphis that's I bet that was a fun place to go to dental school at Beale Street.

Herb: Beale Street,yeah Elvis, the works

Howard: Yeah so let me I want to read your website because I called you, you didn't call me this is an advertisement but I want to read your company background. ioTech International was founded five years ago by dentists and two chemists who converted a Florida garage into a laboratory. The founders knew of the incredible power of molecular iodine to rapidly destroy a broad spectrum of pathogenic microbes they also knew that as deadly as iodine is to germs as amongst the safest of all substance of humans. So safe in fact it is actually an essential nutrient necessary for our health. For decades scientists have been confronted with a paradox at for 50 years has been unsolvable water-based iodine antiseptics are used globally for their superior germ killing properties however the only by biocidal germ killing form iodine is molecular iodine. For every atom of molecular iodine and these antiseptics there are over 10 thousand atoms of other types of iodine which have no capacity to kill microbes but contribute greatly to staining in toxicity the paradox simply stated is that which is present in lease supply contributes the greatest efficiency. Our interpret band of founders toiled mightily for three years developed stable molecular iodine formulations that boost the active molecular iodine concentrations by more than a hundred fold while reducing the non reactive but toxic forms of iodine to amere fraction of their former presence having successfully developed the underlying core technology with a US patent granted and with patent applications pending globally the company moved into larger quarters suitable to support its multiple international initiative. Dental products based on this innovative technology have been tested and have been received best-in-class ratings from a well-known and highly respected independent dental research organization ioTech technology is now being introduced into agriculture medical and dental sectors. Within the dental sector Products are being developed for use in periodontal treatment, caries control, wound healing, infection control, topical antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial. The reason I want to get you on the show is that you know when you and I were little and just got out of school periodontal surgery was all periodontal surgery and then the pendulum switched to extracting those periodontal teeth and placing implants and now thirty years out of school they're looking at all those implants and saying my gosh after ten years probably almost half them have peri-implantitis. Is that something you think will be used for the treatment of peri-implant?

Herb: It's actually being used right now for that purpose and this is a very important application. So in fact it it's so important to us that we felt that this was the first product that we wanted to develop from the this ubiquitous technology which can literally derive hundreds of different products from the technology. so this is in all different fields but particularly in dentistry for professional dental offices and particularly for periodontal applications. we see an immediate and an important application so yes and in fact it actually runs the spectrum from helping to prevent to helping to treat as so and this is the these are for people who are at the very incipient stages for gingivitis all the way up through a severe of periodontitis, so yes absolutely and when we're done with periodontitis and as you said now we're into peri-implantitis so it's a very important application.

Howard: Well you're gonna have to walk us through the journey how do you how do you go from University of Tennessee in Memphis for I practice clinical dentistry 25 years to actually discovering this this new technology how does that work

Herb: Yeah well I actually practiced in upstate New York in the albany new york area for many years and while I was practicing I was introduced to through a young technology in the medical space there were a couple of medical researchers who also were developing some technology in their garage actually and when I looked at this technology I thought it was so profound and so compelling that and they needed so much help that I pitched in initially on a passive basis with financial support and then actively because they needed that much help and it really was at a point that if they if I wasn't there to help them with that then the technology never would have seen the light of day. So it was at that point that I actually left a dentistry to help to develop this technology, that technology was the beginning of the stem-cell revolution and that technology wound up to becoming dermal graphs. Where living human dermis sheets of living humans dermis were grown up in the laboratory and they were used initially for a replacement for animal trials or animal testing. so cosmetic manufacturers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, who needed to do animal testing and then human testing before their products could be approved for use. If we could obviate the need for animal testing by providing living human tissue that they could test safely in the laboratory on then they would need to test on animals because ultimately even if it works on animals they still have to try it on humans so this was a safe and effective way of testing on living human tissue without endangering a human being and and without endangering animals. So that was a series of products that we brought to market and then also we also grew up sheets of dermis and had them cryo preserved in burn centers around the country. so that when someone came in with third-degree burns a surgeon could just lift the the sheet of dermis out of the liquid nitrogen and apply it to the patient and the beauty of the human dermis is that it does not have antigenic factors, so that there is no rejection of human dermis the rejection factors lie in the epidermis. So once the this sheet of dermis was applied to these wounds then the patient would not need a second wound to harvest tissue for a graph because they were using this donated dermis that which had been Cryopreserved and then it was just seated with the patient's own epidermal cells and it actually grew back beautiful skin beautiful skin. So that's being used now in burn centers around the country and then similarly for non healing wounds, venous stasis soldiers, decubitus ulcers. These wounds there's been applications that have been found for the same tissue to be used to help to heal those wounds. So that was my initiation to what brought me out of dentists because the technology was so fascinating and once I had done that, then I was looking at other medical applications to develop and we found the case of MRIs we developed a site-specific MRI scanner which is as small as a dental stool and that site-specific scanner allows for very very inexpensive MRIs where  a patient could have an MRI. The MRI could be in the corner of a doctor's office an orthopedist office and so it could they as if it was for a limb if it was for a knee if it was for a wrist and then those applications can be readily done right there in the doctor's office and it done very very inexpensively. That MRI scanner we brought to market then in addition to that we also developed a treatment for surgical adhesions or actually for the prevention of surgical adhesions I'm particularly for cardiac adhesions and because there's always been a problem when someone goes in for cardiac surgery and that cardiac surgeon will tell you, if you want to see which was an operation as compared to a re-operation ceiling of the surgical suite and if it's covered with blood then you know that it was a reoperation because in order to be able to get to the heart then they have to tease away all the surgical adhesions that had formed from that first operation. So within those surgical adhesions blood vessels, artery materials also form and so it means any additional risk for the patience of several hours more on the table as for and also the additional suite time and surgeons time. So in instead we had developed a bio polymer which can be it looks much like saran wrap but it's bio resorbable and can be tacked to the inside of the chest wall and it helps to prevent surgical adhesions from forming between the heart the pericardium of the heart and the chest wall. So these adhesions form within the first two weeks following surgery so if the biopolymer resorbs after a few weeks, so in that interim period the the adhesions are prevented from forming between the chest wall and the heart and so that when a patient goes in for a reoperation then the surgeons don't have to deal with of that additional operative time and additional risk to the patient. So that product was approved in Europe and it was also approved in the United States. So that's an additional product also developed product for us scar remediation based on a silicone padding a silicone gel and those were brought to market, and we also developed a device called the sure closure device which is a one-time use disposable device which which helps to convert tissue deficit wounds that are non suitable they're so large because of the deficit of tissue in there perhaps it's because of a traumatic wound or because it's cancer surgery where a good deal of tissue is being removed where the borders of the wound are so far apart that it cannot be sutured, so we requires a fill in with granulation tissue or requires a graft. Instead these massive wounds were able to be closed with this device which actually using a tension over a period of about 20 minutes or so against the borders of the wound allowed these collagen fibers which are randomly aligned in the skin and this is what's known as the viscoelastic properties of skin. So these randomly aligned collagen fibers with tension, control attention are line up and slide past each other so you get an enormous amount of stretch and so that these wounds can be sutured. So what we used to require a two-week stay in the hospital with grafting and and the creation of a secondary wound through to for the harvest site of the graft no longer is necessary in many cases with the use of this device because that same wound can now be sutured in 20 minutes or so amazing device. In fact we first saw this device it was being used in Israel and because of traumatic wounds and so one soldier where shrapnel had blown through his leg and the wound was as large as a grapefruit and that wound was closed with this particular prototype of this particular device, so that was a product that we got onto the market fda-approved and that's out there helping people. So along this process we actually evolved to what I think is probably the most relevant and most ubiquitous opportunity which is this iodine chemistry and this iodine chemistry is something I had come across with the in a small company in Massachusetts that I had helped to fund while it was still in its startup stage and that company had developed a high see iodine technology and that iodine technology was used to create bovine teeth disinfectants, a new class of art of teeth disinfectants that were much more effective to help to prevent bacteria from getting into the human food chain when cows are on our milk so that the cow udders are disinfected first with this with this particular iodine treatment and that was marketed to actually about 34, 40 countries. So the USDA requires that cow udders be disinfected before they're milked to go into for human consumption. So that company made a breakthrough in that it developed high levels of iodine but they were not able to keep that technology stable. So that after a few hours the the iodine would dissipate and the effectiveness would be gone. So but I would at that point I'd because I had been a member of the board of that particular company I had intimate knowledge of the effectiveness of high levels of iodine and I subsequently I was talking to the chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at a major teaching hospital and he was telling me that they had done some studies where they developed a an antiviral who has a throat spray and that antiviral they used it for Viral pharyngitis for sore throats virally induced sore throats and they felt that the results were so good that they felt that it was curative. So this is a true it was an initial pilot study but it got me to thinking because I already knew about the important uses of iodine of dentistry and I thought oh my gosh, if they can treat topically the viruses that cause sore throats and it does not have to be treated systemically and the way it was explained to me by this by the CEA teeth surgeon was that the viruses burrow into the mucosa of the throat but is still accessible topically. So with a twice a day throat spray they were actually getting effective results and they were doing that with a plant based extract which was similar to like eucalyptus and other aromatic oils which are extracted from plants and at the time he was telling me about this I already knew about the tremendous efficacy of iodine and that how it could is so much more effective as an antiviral in fact it's unbeatable. So we went back to the drawing boards and even though this first iodine company that I told you about they had three PhDs working for four years trying to get their iodine to be stable so that it could be used in commercial applications other than as a bovine teeth disinfectant but they were unsuccessful at it. So we thought you know what this is a long shot it probably will not work we probably will not be able to develop it but we went back to the drawing boards and we actually spent three years trying to get a high potency molecular iodine formulation which would be shelf-stable that could be used for hundreds of different germicidal activities for agriculture for healthcare for industry for consumer products across the board and lo and behold we were able to do it and we had on our team we have some really expert iodine scientists and they were able to come up with the with a formulation and a stable formulation that we've shelf tested for two years or more. So we have products that we can use in these applications and beautiful thing about iodine is that it's an essential nutrient, it is so safe that our bodies require iodine in order to prevent iodine deficiency diseases and in fact so that's kind of what led me into the into our forming of IO tech and we have a patent on that technology in the US and their patents pending worldwide for that same technology and there's a huge huge product product opportunities in a number of different areas. So that's that's kind of we how we how we went from from practicing dentistry to to developing iodine formulations.

Howard: Wow, the halogens on the periodic table they're really common in dentistry I mean you got a column 17 fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, acetate, bronze, astatine?

Herb: Astatine

Howard: That's the column on the periodic table underneath going down fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine, that is amazing. It's an amazing atom, it's an amazing column on the periodic table the halogens aren't they?

Herb: Oh yeah and then that's why they have widespread use for these germicidal applications.

Howard: So yeah so on all these previous technologies you've invented, where are they going into dentistry now and I see y'all b2b and you also are going after the b2c. You kind of remind me of Apple Steve Jobs, starting this thing in a garage and my gosh and then not only that but you remind me of Bob Ibsen of DenMat who started a that. What was his toothpaste called the Rembrandt and the mouthwash launching a b2c product that's a totally different world than b2b business the business dentist a dentist but going into the b2c world with your io-rinse mouthwash this is kind of a you're kind of the are you the reincarnation of Bob Ibsen are you gonna take off?

Herb: I don't think so because it's not our intention for us to go b2c with on the ioRinse mouthwash. What we're developing now is is a group of products for professional dental use only, for use in dental practices and on the recommendation of dentists. These products are not sold in stores and we don't attend to them to be sold in stores. Now having said that their's separate so separately there will be a line of products which will not be the same as our as the ones we're marketing to the dental community but they will benefit from the same core technology and those applications we intend to out license to a major players in the consumer products world in that particular case and other major innovators that already have established infrastructure and their various respective markets but we ourselves do not intend to develop and market to the consumer space.

Howard: My gosh if you were on Shark Tank the bald beautiful Mr. Wonderful would love you. That's what he's always telling people on Shark Tank, it's already major players in this space let's license the technology to them, let's not reinvent the wheel. So I think Mr. Wonderful would be in love with you, have you seen that show?

Herb: I've seen it from time to time not enough to know who mr. wonderful is

Howard: He's the bald one from Canada.

Herb: Okay got him

Howard: You'll notice in any group guy is always the smartest one.

Herb: Right right, well there you go I'm looking at one right now.

Howard: So tell us more of your dental journey so how is this gonna work my the dentist listening to you right now are commuting to work who have I mean guys if you're a periodontist probably have hundreds of patients with peri-implantitis. What would you be telling them to do right now?

Herb: Okay so in order to get a good grounding in this thing is to understand really how do we differentiate the products that are out there now compared to the innovations that we're bringing to market so then I think it will be useful if we can just take a look at the, what sets this technology apart and why is it so superior to existing technologies.

Howard: So you're gonna do a slideshow right now?

Herb: I'm not gonna do a slide show but their are two or three slides which can show we can have to point that out.

Herb: Okay all right so probably to get the best benefit of this I think it's important to know that iodine has been around forever in fact the first recorded use of iodine has been 56 hundred years ago by the early Chinese physicians. They used iodine or they used products which contained iodine to treat goiters, enlarged thyroid glands and they did it successfully and they did that by grinding up seaweed and sea urchins or sea sponges and making a paste of it and wrapping it around patients necks. So this was all done before iodine was even discovered as an element they didn't know the early Chinese physicians that they were using iodine. They knew it worked so empirically it worked. It wasn't until the 1800s that iodine was discovered as an element and the first types of iodine which we used therapeutically after its discovery were alcoholic solutions of iodine. Tinters of iodine are more particularly because iodine dissolves very very readily in alcohol. It was only sparsely soluble in water, so the first solutions of iodine were tinters alcoholic solutions and they were very effective and they are very effective but they didn't get as much traction as they could because of the alcohol then the anytime it was put on an open wound then the alcohol burned and stung. So it had limited utility even though it was recognized as a very effective antiseptic wasn't until the mid 1950s that iodophor is particularly povidone-iodine, which is a water based solution of iodine was introduced and these water based solutions even though the iodine molecules were not soluble in water or barely soluble in water. They introduced polyvinyl pyrrolidone a large organic molecule which is extremely water soluble and it physically bonded that molecule physically bonded to the iodine molecules and dragged the iodine molecules kicking and screaming into solution. So they were able to develop the fact this was done at NASA, they developed water based solutions and this has been in use for ever since and so water based solutions of iodine povidone-iodine betadine is a common name have been in use continuously since the 50s and they used around the world they're used in hospitals around the world of surgical scrubs they uses preoperative patients skin preps but there has been no major innovation and iodine since the introduction of iota fors in the 50s until the advent of our technology. So this is really the most important advance in iodine chemistry in the last 60 years or so. So if you compare povidone-iodine by to our technology you'll see that first povidone-iodine is we call it iodine but it's actually a gommish, it's a mixture of several different species of iodine and of all those different species of iodine only one species is bioactive and that biocidal species is molecular iodine and that and a molecular iodine is only present in foldedon iodine at one or two parts per million a maximum of 3 parts per million. The rest of the iodine in povidone-iodine which is hypo is acid triiodide, iodate, iodide. Those iodine species constitute the vast bulk of the iodine present in povidone-iodine but those species of iodine are not bioactive they don't kill germs yet they contribute to toxicity and staining right. So in povidone-iodine you wind up with about thirty one thousand six hundred parts per million of all these different species of iodine and yet only the two or three parts per million of molecular iodine do all the heavy lifting. They're the ones that do the killing of germs not the other species. So for our purposes the rest of the iodine is all garbage iodine, it just it just has negative consequences and does not contribute to biocidal efficacy. We have been able through our technology to develop formulations which are one two and even three hundred times as much molecular iodine yet reducing the other species of iodine to just negligible quantities. So that the total amount of iodine in our formulations are just perhaps eight nine or without or a nine hundred or a thousand parts per million total iodine compared to the thirty one thousand six hundred parts per million in povidone-iodine and yet it's a hundreds of times more effective. Okay so if you look at this diagrammatically for those of you who were able to pull up your screen you'll see that the diagram on the left is schematic represents ten percent povidone-iodine which is what's used in dental offices and hospitals and most of the molecules are not molecular iodine. there's only one out of ten thousand atoms of iodine are the molecular iodine atoms. Whereas our iodine in the diagram on the right is predominantly molecular iodine and very few of these other species and this next slide shows a graph which shows the concentration of molecular iodine in povidone-iodine and ten percent povidone-iodine which is currently used in dental offices contains at most two or three parts per million as you see on this screen. Alright when you compare the efficacy of povidone-iodine to our molecular iodine formulations their was one study that was done by which you poliovirus which is a non-enveloped virus which is extremely difficult to kill and 10% povidone-iodine solution took 15 minutes to achieve a 0.6 log kill 15 minutes for a 0.6 log kill. Whereas our solution was able to completely inactivate the polio virus over 4 with a 4.5 log kill in 90 seconds. So there's a big big differential in the actual results compared to povidone-iodine and our molecular iodine formulations. So compared to both chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine the iotech formulations are stronger they're faster acting they're less toxic they don't irritate the non-staining and they have a much broader spectrum of activity and in fact when we talk about activity we had compared against a very very resilient fungus Aspergillus brasiliensis in fact that's used by microbiology laboratories as kind of the gold standard if you can kill Aspergillus brasiliensis you can kill any fungus and we tested it not against Chlorhexidine Gluconate oral rinse but a much stronger Chlorhexidine Gluconate preparation which is in this particular case we tested it against chloraprep. Chloraprep is a pre surgical skin prep a strong one, which is used in hospitals it has 17 times as much Chlorhexidine Gluconate as the oral rinse because the oral rinse is only 0.12 percent Chlorhexidine Gluconate whereas the chloraprep is 2 percent. 17 times as much Chlorhexidine Gluconate and it also has 70% isopropyl alcohol so it two key actives 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Our product was able to inactivate Aspergillus brasiliensis in one-fourth the time then that chloraprep was able to do. So if it was if there was such a differential between chloraprep and our product then you could you can understand that there's a even a much much greater differential between Chlorhexidine oral rinse and our products and in fact for those of you who do have a screen available you'll be able to see on this slide that the vial on the right which contains povidone-iodine is a dark dark brownish color a yellowish brown color and at the same concentration of molecular iodine that our formulation is actually clear. So their's a big difference between that product and  also the ioTech product. That here their's a in fact when we also actually tested it i think i had mentioned to you before about my interest in rhinovirus or in Viral pharyngitis from from the conversation I had with CNT surgeon and so since a rhinovirus which is also a non-enveloped virus extremely difficult to kill extremely difficult to kill, a rhinovirus is the principal causative organism for Viral pharyngitis with sore throats and we tested Listerine we tested scope we tested Colgate Total, all of them were ineffective against rhinovirus, this is in a 30 second exposure whereas the aya tech product completely inactivated or completely destroy rhinovirus in that same timeframe. When you compare the the ioTech rinses to two other oral rinses and we looked at Chlorhexidine Gluconate, we looked at povidone-iodine we looked at chlorine dioxide two-part activated, we looked at other chlorine compounds and the in fact we looked at sodium chlorite and when we look at the duration of use Chlorhexidine Gluconate and also povidone-iodine are indicated for short-term use only. The iorinse product is used for us either short or learnt the long term it could be used for chronic use. In fact we advocate its use on a daily at-home regimen and for as long as someone has their teeth or as for as long as they have implants. the Chlorhexidine Gluconate gluconate and the povidone-iodine stain the teeth and tongue the our products of non-staining. As far as the effectiveness for the other products that we compared it to that both for bacterial efficacy and also for virus idolic efficacy, that the molecular iodine products were more effective than these others. It's the lowest toxicity because it's a it's an essential nutrient. We have governments around the world mandate the use of iodized assault as in an expensive public health measure to help to keep us from developing iodine deficiency disease and with regard to taste well the chlorhexidine gluconate of povidone-iodine have an objectionable taste compared to our product which is has a pleasant flavor either as a mint is a cinnamon flavor. As far as cost is concerned that the costing of the these other products are run anywhere from more expensive to four times as much. So our product is much more cost effective in a case of chlorine dioxide products they were three times as much as sodium chloride products, twice as much and chlorhexidine products, for the same equivalent volume of product there were four times as much. Chlorhexidine Gluconate is irritating it's also a potential carcinogen if you look at the material safety data sheet on your chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse you see it's a potential carcinogenic it has eleven point six percent alcohol so it's irritating and so also have been implicated in rare but fatal anaphylactic shock and as an additional side effect it also shows the development of dental calculus. The iodine preparations are ready to go the molecular iodine preparations yet the chlorine dioxide the two part activated requires mixing it for each use and then waiting from 30 to 60 seconds. As far as the duration of effect the nothing lasts as long as the molecular iodine, their's been studies which have shown that the molecular iodine has lasted four times as long as Chlorhexidine Gluconate on on microbial on a micro flora in the periodontal pocket and so when we're talking about efficacy you're talking about safety you're talking about cost comparisons this molecular iodine is fabulous and in addition it's important really to note not just with our iodine but with any iodine. That iodine does not allow the development of bacterial resistance. I mean that they named bugs due to their bacteria resistance d-r-e vancomycin-resistant enterococci Amerson methicillin-resistant Staph Aureus it just list goes on and on and so most antimicrobials and antibiotics allow microbial resistance that developed that does not happen with iodine. In fact not only is there no evidence in the literature that that microbial resistance develops the iodine but but iodine molecular iodine is so potent that our formulations have been used to completely inactivate bacillus subtilis spores and also Clostridium sporogenes spores which are the spores which it does designated by the FDA for spore test strips to validate the efficiency and efficacy of autoclaves to show that they actually are sterilizing because if you can kill bacillus subtilis and if you can kill Clostridium sporogenes then as far as FDA is concerned then you can kill microorganisms and and can be classified as a chem as is a yes sterilant. So of course the board is a it's extremely effective and extremely safe. So it's a boon for many many different applications in dentistry and those we expect to bring on board the future including anti caries rinses, all those creams to for viral ulcers, antifungal rinses for the mitigation of caries plaque and decalcification for ortho patients for pre and post surgical rinses for dry sockets and incision site infections as an intraoperative arrogant for ultrasonic scaling and root planing, for endodontic arrogance and sealers, as a antibacterial dentinal scrub prior to bonding of restorations and cementations of prepared teeth and for a pre surgical scrub for surface disinfection of impressions, instrument disinfection time the list goes on and on and on. It's a wonderful breath freshener and also as a solid surface a disinfectant and so their's a lot of opportunity within the professional dental arena and then I'm sure that's going to keep us busy for a very long time.

Howard: So are dentists just buying this product on your website Are they buying it right now?

Herb: Yes the ioTtech product available on our on the, we have two portals on the website, one is for dental patients and the other one is for a dentist where which is password-protected and it's for dental offices only and where dentists can get wholesale prices and the products available are the they're ready to use mouth rinse and that's 100 parts per million of molecular iodine, which is about 30 to 50 times more concentrated than that which is in povidone-iodine and also there's we have a concentrated irrigant to be used with a an oral irrigating device, we've had it tested on with a Waterpik with their pickpocket tip and that's to be used as a medicated rinse at home as an arrogant for subgingival irrigation and we also have a gel which is 250 parts per million iogel which is to be used in full archtrays and as a periodontal tray, much like a whitening tray and that's for more severe cases where patients would would wear at 15 minutes a day and so that's another product that's available on our website and so there's basically three different products that we make available. We've had these products initially that we had a pilot study done three years ago for these products and it was done by a board-certified periodontist and with 53 patients, it was over six month period of time and the the results were dramatic they were they were compared to Chlorhexidine Gluconate they were superior and in fact it gave us the impetus to develop our first products, professional dental products to be used in this area. So after that and by the way the patients were in that six month study to this day most of them are still using this product on a daily basis because the periodontist doesn't want to take them off of it and the patients don't want to go off of it. The we recently had a study done or an evaluation done by Gordon Christensen clinicians report and that was, there were two evaluations done one was for the ready to use rinse with a hundred and twenty five patients in 25 dental offices the other one was for the concentrated irrigant and that also was a separate 25 dental offices and a separate 125 patients and the result was so good in that clinicians report voted both of those products as best products of the year of thousand nineteen in their annual buying guide. So and the ingredients in these products and not only are they essential nutrients but they're also on the FDA's gras list of generally recognized as safe substances. So they're natural, organic and so yes that's what's on our website.

Howard:So Gordon Christiansen his wife Rella has a PhD in microbiology, what does Rella think of this?

Herb: You know I haven't spoken directly with her about it so I can't answer that. You'll have to speak to Rella about that.

Howard: Are you or any of the periodontal schools using this right now? I mean how many what is there fifty-six dental schools in the United States, how many have a pario program and how many of them are gonna start trying this?

Herb: Well actually we were actually waiting for the that clinicians report evaluation to be completed which was just recently evaluated and so now we're first like introducing this product and in fact we've just now started a our marketing campaign. So it's first now being introduced So we've sent we've sent product to to several different dental schools, so and there are a number of periodontist that are using it in the United States and Zi Mazor or who's the the president of the Israel Society of Oral Implantology, he was a previous president of the Israel Society of Periodontists. He's been using it in his practice and he lectures in the state's a lot to two periodontist around the country, he was a keynote speaker at the American Academy of Periodontology. So their are a number of opinion leaders who are beginning to use the product and in their offices and also starting to talk about on electro circuit so it's just now being introduced.

Howard: and what about I'm you know again I just love that column 17 I mean fluorine, chlorine. I mean dentists use chlorine dioxide for bad breath, do you have you tested this against aromatic sulfur compounds to see if it also treats mal-odor or bad breath?

Herb: Yes yes in fact yes we've used it with the delimiter and yes it very effective in fact our formulation we tested it and it provides a long-term benefit for these volatile sulfur compounds, long term benefit because  it's the most effective and killing the bacteria that produce them.

Howard: I think it's interesting out here in Arizona how people don't understand the periodic table because if they have a swimming pool and for some reason they decide they don't like chlorine, they pay to have their whole system in place which is just bromine which is just basically the same family right underneath chlorine, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and it's amazing how iodine was been treated to treat goiter, iodized salt. I mean it's just an amazing classification of elements. What about people who would think well I'm allergic to shellfish, I can't have iodine. What would you say to that person?

Herb: Yeah so their's probably two or three main concerns about iodine one would be a shellfish allergy and that's a pretty prevalent but the the shellfish allergy turns out to be a sensitivity to a protein in the and the muscle of the shellfish. So in the literature and the medical literature it's replete with references now to that this is not a an iodine allergy, it's a protein sensitization. So that's not an issue, this is also there's a concern with iodine as to thyroid toxicity and we see this from time to time where with some of the research who has already shown that the thyroid gland selectively uptakes iodide it does not selectively uptake molecular iodine, so thorough toxicity is really a not a concern because their's no greater when even if it was ingested there is no greater concentration of molecular iodine in the thyroid gland as there would be in any other tissue of the body but our products are not intended for ingestion, so that that's really of of limited concern. The other concern that people have would be with this iodine contrast media for imaging and the distinction here is that yes it's true, that these are iodine related contrast media but the in the first instance it's being injected into the directly into the vein so you're getting a shock to the system there's a large bolus of fluid being injected into the vein so the quantity of iodide which is being delivered is far greater and it's also iodide. The second part is that it's also been found that their are excipient in the radial contrast media and those excipient which people are developing a reaction to and these excipient particularly those that have high as molarity have engendered the greatest reaction. So when they've substitute using the same amount of iodide substituting the excipient the low osmolarity of excipient, they found that the reactions fell off dramatically. So we this is neat having a reaction to some iodine contrast media is not the same as having a reaction to iodine particularly molecular iodine and again our products are not intended for ingestion so this just topically apply, their is some absorption but nowhere near where you would get with ingestion. Also there's been had been a study which had been done on over 2000 women in the United States and this was for the treatment of fibrocystic breast disease which is a precursor to breast cancer and molecular iodine tablets were used on a daily by these women for over two years and there were no reportable adverse events in over two years and the amount of iodine that they were ingesting I'm talking about molecular iodine now the amount of iodine that they were ingesting is probably 10 to 50 times as much as what would be available in a bottle of our product, if our product was to be drinking which it's not so.

Howard: You think of the developing world I don't like to call it the third world I think that's kind of rude but there's 238 countries, do you think where they have a problem with goiter that this absorbable form of iodine molecular iodine would be a treatment for goiter?

Herb: It could be a treatment for goiter actually it has a much more profound yeah because there are other things that could be used for goiter did this actually has more profound use for third-world countries and we were straying outside of dentistry but we're also again working with large corporate partners. We've looked at this in agriculture and the statisticians are indicating that in 50 years from now their's not going to be enough food in the world to feed the world's population, it's just not going to be enough food. So right now the produce the vegetables the fruits that beings produce at least 40 percent maybe 45 percent of all that produce is spoils before it's ever eaten so that if there was a way of reducing the amount of spoilage or increasing crop yields then that would go a long long way in order to help to feed the world's populations and helping people in these third-world countries and so to that end on a on a pre harvest basis our products are I think I had mentioned to you that iodine does not develop or allow microbial resistance to develop well the fungicides that are being used now in plants are many of them are like neurotoxins and the way they even know that they're there in you sometimes the birds are falling out of the sky. So to have something which is so safe as an iodine which can kill the the the fungi and bacteria that are responsible for and viruses which are responsible for crop destruction and do it so safely is something which is very very important to large agriculture chemical companies as well as the idea that since no resistance develops they and it does develop the other fungicides and pesticides. You know within two years of a new pesticide being introduced though those pestis are these bacteria and fungi begin to show resistance and they start to lose their effectiveness, these agrochemical companies are spending tens of millions and maybe even hundreds of millions of dollars to bring you part of products to market and then finding within the first two years that after they've got to registered in all the countries that they want to use them and that they're no longer being effective. So to have something where resistance is not a problem where it's safer to use where it's more effective is a boom and in fact to that end there's a ringworm which is called a nematode and these nematodes are actually a cause more destruction to crops than all the insects in the world combined. Their's 157 billion dollars in crop loss each year due to nematodes and this runs the gamut all kinds of crops, whether they're grown in cold weather climates tropical climates doesn't make any difference. So they found that in fact the the Mexican agricultural Institute which is funded by the Mexican government to help to keep Mexican farmers technologically competitive with other producers in the world because most of their production comes to the United States then they their laboratories tested our products and they did it for nematodes and they found that ours was the only Pony was a superior to the other numata size on the market but actually it's superior in the sense that it killed nematode eggs it was the only one that they they've tested in their laboratories in 20 years that was able to destroy nematode eggs. It's really an enigma how on the one hand you have something which is so effective and on the other hand is so safe the human. So that's for crop yields and also for a freshness extension of crops. They also found that because our product this is post harvest now they because these our product also helps to destroy the spoilage bacteria and spoil it's a fungi on fruits and vegetables that these crops last longer and in fact we've gotten a two and three week extension of shelf-life on on different berries and fruits compared to not having been treated with our products. So it has huge applications within agriculture and also the in fact for all perishable foods fish, meat. It sounds like a miracle but but every time I look at it so it's amazing but this that's done and that's why compared to all the technologies that I've been associated with this thing is so ubiquitous that has so many different applications and some very very important ones are in dentistry but there are other ones which are going to help mankind outside of dentistry as well.

Howard: Well Herb you know what I wish you would really do, you're talking about you know you're on this podcast talking to dentists as they commute to work if I go to Dentaltown there's a quarter million dentists they posted oh my gosh I mean how many times do they posted them but anyway would I do a search for the word iodine their are, how many threads come up, their are ninety threads talking about iodine. I wish you would go to Dentaltown and that's why I love the message board over like Facebook or Twitter. I mean Twitter let's say that you were talking about something a year ago well I don't really have a way to search that to find out what to find that conversation but on a message board format you can just do a search for iodine and I wish you would pull up all those threads and find a good thread for you to interact and start sharing these slides that you put up on the today.
