Industry Insights: DentalMonitoring—More Than Remote Monitoring

Industry Insights: DentalMonitoring—More Than Remote Monitoring

A new standard in orthodontics

DentalMonitoring has long been recognized as a trusted remote monitoring solution, helping orthodontists enhance patient experiences between in-office visits.

However, it is now clear that DentalMonitoring is more than just a remote connection tool—it is a clinically validated medical device that is reshaping orthodontic care.

Now classified as a software as a medical device (SaMD) in Europe and North America, DentalMonitoring has been FDA- and MDR-validated, proving its ability to monitor 18 intraoral conditions with exceptional sensitivity and specificity. Clinical performance has been rigorously validated through extensive studies, analyzing more than 13,000 clinical data points from 2,654 patients across 29 sites, setting a new standard of care in orthodontics.

With DentalMonitoring, practitioners can remotely track critical treatment factors, including:
  • Archwire passivity
  • Bracket debonding
  • Open clips and doors
  • Tie loss
  • Aligner seating and unseating
  • Button or attachment loss
  • Gingival recession
  • Tooth wear
  • Black triangles
  • Anterior space closure
  • Extraction space closure
  • Anterior occlusion
  • Retainer tracking
  • Midline deviation
  • Overbite, open bite and overjet
  • Canine occlusion

DentalMonitoring+
DentalMonitoring is set to launch DentalMonitoring+, a notable innovation that introduces automated 3D modeling directly within the doctor dashboard.

Until now, patients have used DentalMonitoring to capture weekly remote scans, allowing AI to analyze images, trigger clinical notifications for orthodontists and send automated instructions via the DM App.

With DentalMonitoring+, the development team has introduced a new feature that enhances treatment personalization like never before. Patients will continue using the DM App and ScanBox pro to take their scans, but now, each weekly scan will automatically generate a dynamic 3D study model within the doctor dashboard.

This significant update provides orthodontists with a new level of clinical insight, enabling them to:
  • Observe, measure and refine treatment plans with precision.
  • Access detailed tooth movement data, including rotations and translations.
  • Evaluate occlusal contacts and track orthodontic indices over time.
  • Utilize grids for symmetry and alignment checks.
  • Digitally manipulate teeth to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes.
  • Maintain digital records for enhanced documentation.
By delivering automated, interactive 3D models, DentalMonitoring+ redefines how orthodontists monitor, analyze and adjust treatment— bringing efficiency and accuracy to modern orthodontics.

SmartSTL
Building on its AI-powered scan technology, DentalMonitoring introduces SmartSTL. Traditionally, STL files are required for fabricating retainers or aligners, and providers often need new scans to create refinements. SmartSTL transforms this process with remote AI technology, eliminating the need for in-office scans by providing up-to-date, accurate STL files without in-person visits. Using the initial intraoral scan and the current stage STL file, the technology integrates these with patient scans taken from home.

With SmartSTL, doctors can seamlessly access the latest STL files through the DentalMonitoring dashboard, reducing the need for additional scans and optimizing workflow efficiency for practices and patients alike. This advancement fuels the optimization flywheel, where every orthodontic patient benefits from remote monitoring, driving greater efficiency and elevating the standard of care.

Dynamic Scheduling
One of the most transformative aspects of DentalMonitoring isn’t just a product—it’s an innovative treatment philosophy called dynamic scheduling.

The problem with traditional scheduling
In conventional orthodontics, appointments are scheduled at fixed intervals—every four to six weeks for braces and four to eight weeks for aligners—without considering the patient’s unique biological response. This one-size-fits-all approach often leads to unnecessary visits where no meaningful progress can be made, such as when teeth haven’t moved enough to justify an archwire change.

Orthodontic success depends on patient compliance—brushing effectively, keeping appliances clean, wearing aligners or elastics as prescribed and notifying their provider of any issues. Non-compliance can extend treatment time and lead to complications like decalcification or gum disease.

A patient-driven treatment model

With remote monitoring, DentalMonitoring ensures that:
  • Patients receive automated hygiene reminders based on their scans.
  • Staff can send personalized video instructions if improvements are needed.
  • Practices are alerted to emergencies through intraoral scans and videos, enabling faster intervention—whether remotely or in-office.
Efficiency for patients and practices
When treatment extends beyond the expected timeline, it increases operational costs for the practice, as patients typically pay a fixed fee for their treatment. By eliminating unnecessary appointments and bringing patients in only when clinically necessary, dynamic scheduling:
  • Improves treatment efficiency
  • Enhances patient experience
  • Reduces staff workload
  • Gives orthodontists better financial control
By embracing dynamic scheduling, practices can provide smarter, patient-centric care while optimizing resources—making orthodontic treatment more efficient, responsive and cost-effective for both patients and providers.

Staff Support
In busy orthodontic practices, DentalMonitoring streamlines daily workflows, making life easier for both doctors and staff. Staffing shortages remain a major challenge, but DentalMonitoring helps practices operate more efficiently, even with smaller teams.

With real-time patient scans, staff can anticipate needs, prepare for appointments in advance and eliminate unexpected surprises that often lead to long, stressful days. Dynamic scheduling further optimizes workflows by reducing unnecessary visits, allowing team members to:
  • Spend more quality time with each patient
  • Focus on higher-value tasks rather than repetitive check-ins
  • Experience less burnout and greater job satisfaction

Seamless Integrations
Some of the most influential companies in orthodontics have integrated DentalMonitoring into their systems, recognizing its essential role in modern patient care and practice management.

Leading platforms such as Ormco, Spark Approver Software, Angel Aligner’s iOrtho, Dolphin Management System, OrthoBridge, GreyFinch, Orthalis and Bright Referral have invested time and resources to ensure seamless compatibility with DentalMonitoring.

These integrations empower orthodontists to:
  • Streamline workflows by managing treatment within their preferred platform.
  • Enhance patient care with AI-driven remote monitoring.
  • Improve efficiency by centralizing patient data and clinical insights.
By embedding DentalMonitoring into industry-leading systems, orthodontic practices can streamline workflows, optimize resources and enhance patient care more efficiently.

The Future of AI-powered Orthodontics
By leveraging DentalMonitoring as a medical device and clinical tool, doctors are achieving superior treatment outcomes and reducing treatment time. What once took up to eight weeks for assessment and adjustment now happens within one week—or even sooner if a patient reports an issue.

With more than 1 million patients monitored monthly worldwide, we are approaching a tipping point where AI-driven remote monitoring is becoming the expected standard of care. Patients increasingly view orthodontic treatment as a personalized, AI-optimized experience, tailored to their unique biological response—and DentalMonitoring providers are leading this transformation.

This is not just remote monitoring—this is the future of orthodontics.
