New Dental Gel Combines Xylitol and Baking Soda to Mimic Saliva

People with Sjogren's have a new method to fight dental complications.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by dry eyes and mouth which can often lead to severe dental complications. While the lack of saliva usually greatly increases the risk of decay a new way to reduce this problem has been proposed which uses dental retainers and a protective gel. A manufacturer in Florida is now selling several products with a baking soda and xylitol formulation which provide pH and bacterial controls that mimic some of the key roles of saliva.

The products, which include pH7Smile (50 ML) and retainer gel (255 ML), can be applied inside clear dental retainers or aligners for use during part of the day and during sleep when saliva flow is less for most people, especially those with Sjogren's. Baking soda is an ingredient that neutralizes acid which often comes from bacterial plaque and acid reflux. Xylitol is a natural sweetener that has the remarkable property of reducing cavity-causing oral bacteria. The developer of the products looks forward to an upcoming invention from another dental inventor which will bring pH monitoring to mainstream dental professionals.

A spokesperson for pH7Smile says if dentists work together with patients with dry mouth and acidic conditions using this simple method the patients may be able to counteract much of the harm. Besides dental erosion and decay of teeth, this approach may be able to extend the lifetime of fillings, crowns and veneers. Dental implants seem to be relatively immune to the effects of a dry mouth but they are not a perfect solution.

Dental professionals with an interest in helping patients with Sjogren's syndrome and other dry/acidic mouth conditions caused by diabetes, acid reflux, aging, effects of medication, chemotherapy and recreation drugs are encouraged to contact the manufacturer directly through the website pH7Smile.com or SjogrensDentalGel.com.
